EUPHEMISM
3 Contemporer Research in The field of Euphemism:
1. Brown and Levinson (1978, p. 66)
Find: Adapting
Brown and Levinson’s ‘Politeness’ Theory to the Analysis of Casual Conversation.
The fundamental idea underlying face-work theory
is that people living in a society do their best to save their face and not to
lose it. It must be noted that face is a very fragile element that can be
easily damaged by others. Therefore, when people communicate with each other,
all participants are in charge of maintaining not only their own face, but also
other people's face.
2. Kate Burridge and Keith Allan
Find: Euphemism &
Dysphemism: Language Used as Shield and Weapon
This study is a linguistic and socio-psychological
exploration of a universal human practice. The text argues that euphemisms and
dysphemisms demonstrate the poetic inventiveness of ordinary people and reveal
a folk culture that has received little attention.
3. R. W. Holder
Find: How Not to Say what You Mean: A
Dictionary of Euphemisms
Now
obsolete euphemisms like 'leaping house', 'nightingale' are signposted as such.
And to prove that the use of euphemisms is not just a British speciality, there
is widespread coverage of American euphemisms too: 'English' (pertaining to
sexual deviance), 'watermelon' (an indication of pregnancy).
