Pitcher Plant

           Pitcher Plant is one of Carnivorous plants. It includes in Nepenthaceae family that grows in Indonesia and several other countries. There are 70 species of Nephenthes in worldwide, 40% of them on the Kalimantan and only 10% are grown outside the Asean countries. Pitcher Plant is not a flower nor fruit, but the leaves are modified. In general, this plant lives in the badlands. However, there are some species live in the fertile land.

            Pitcher Plant is a climber or creeper plant. The leaves like oval shape and not jeggy. They have stem lengts ranges from 5-10 cm. Shape of Pitcher Plant is very dependent on the species. This plant produces some nectar glands. They are under cover and in the mouth of bag that produce nectar. The glands have purpose as attention getter of insect or another animal to come to this plant, then Pitcher Plant will eat the insect.

            At least 6 species of Pitcher Plant in Riau, such as Nephenthes ampullaria, Nephenthes tobaica, Nephenthes densiflora, Nephenthes gymnamphora, Nephenthes gracillima and Nephenthes sp. Pitcher plant is independent plant, lives in the land, climbs the low or free panhandle.
